DESCRIPTION: This is a very pleasant level hike along the Auburn Canal (more accurately
called the Shirland Canal). The canal is a vital waterway for residents in the
area ----- originating in the mountains and ending in the foothills. There may
or may not be any water in the canal due to the water supply being severed from
a break in the Bear River Canal near Colfax. Nevertheless it is a favorite
place for hiking and jogging for Auburn residents --- and if you attend this
hike, you will find it a favorite place also (although we will hike and not
jog!!). Part of the trail is shaded which is nice if the weather is warm. The
trail is packed dirt. This will be a morning hike and you will be home at LH
for lunch.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE: 1) IF YOU HAVE ANY HEALTH ISSUES, PLEASE CONSIDER
YOUR CONDITION BEFORE HIKING. 2) Bring a copy of your ID (driver's
license), health card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you
on the hike. 3) Always bring 2 pairs of shoes, along with a plastic
bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike. DO NOT get your
driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the way home. 4)
Bring snack and water. If you uncomfortable with narrow trails, it is
recommended to bring trekking poles. Along the route, there are a few places
where it is quite narrow and poles would aid in good balance.
|
|
RISKS: Narrow
sections of trail along canal require caution.
