Cardiac Bypass at Auburn State Recreation Area

Difficulty: Strenuous

Elevation Gain: Approximately elevation 1300-1400 Feet (pending hiking reference book)

Hike Distance:  Approximately 7 miles

Location: North Fork American River

Description:  This trail is considered an advanced hike which takes you from 1,312 elevation all the way down to the American River at 204 elevation. The hike is awe-inspiring with beautiful scenery including the Forest Hill Bridge and American River.  The hike begins along Shirland Canal. Some areas are steep with rocky footing and mud from recent rains. Some poison oak may be encountered along the trail. The return hike is all uphill including the dirt trail and then extremely steep, mostly paved and graveled area. Snack  or early lunch at the  midway point when we reach the American River. 

Travel Time/Distance:  ½ hour, 13 miles one way.  Rider to pay $ 3.00 to driver.  Expect to return back to OC between 2:30 and 3:00 PM

Special Notes:

Facilities Available:  There are bathroom facilities at the start in the parking lot.

Preparation for Hike;  Wear hiking boots, bring walking poles, snack/lunch, and plenty of water.

 
Risks Extremely steep uphill climb on return for almost 1 mile/45 minutes. You could experience breathing challenges and joint pain.
