DEER CREEK TRIBUTE TRAIL

DIFFICULTY:  New route! Moderate --- well-maintained trail with some ups and downs.

ELEVATION:  Highest point --- approx. 2700 feet.  Lowest point --- approx. 2500 feet. 

HIKE DISTANCE:  Approximately 6 1/2 miles (not a loop)

GENERAL LOCATION:  Starting just west of Nevada City and traversing the Deer Creek Tribute and Deer Creek Environs Trails.

DESCRIPTION: 
Deer Creek Environs Trail starts west of Nevada City, crossing an impressive suspension bridge high above the creek to a wooded loop with interpretive panels recognizing the early Nisenans.  Returning across the bridge, the Deer Creek Tribute Trail briefly follows the historic Newtown Canal with a side trail down to Stocking Flat where we will have lunch.  The elegant Chinese Bridge again crosses the creek, accessing a 0.6 mile wooded loop with views overlooking the canyon and creek. 

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  40 miles one way, one hour driving time.  Return time to Lincoln approximately 3:30 pm.  A donation to drivers of $6 is suggested.

SPECIAL NOTES:
     FACILITIES:  Good public bathroom located in the downtown parking lot

     PREPARATION FOR HIKE: 
        1) BRING A COPY OF YOUR ID (DRIVER'S LICENSE), HEALTH CARD, AND AN EMERGENCY CONTACT NAME AND PHONE NUMBER WITH YOU WHEN YOU HIKE. 
        2) If you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking.
        3) Always bring 2 pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty boots after the hike.
        4) Bring lunch, water, and hiking boots.  Trekking poles may be useful if it’s muddy.


RISKS:  Some poison oak but easily avoidable. May be mosquitos.
