DESCRIPTON:
Explore the forces that created the landscape of North Auburn. On Friday,

June 1. we'll have a special hike focusing on the GEOLOGY of the foothills. The Big Hill
Preserve contains unusual rock formations, the gently flowing Raccoon Creek, and
spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley. This hike
is one of Placer Land Trust's most popular!
Docents Karl Mertz, Sarah Roeske, and Bob Niblack are trained geologists. Karl is a
retired geology professor from Sac State & Sierra College. Sarah teaches and does
research at UC Davis with a focus on fault zones. And Bob worked for the Department of
Water Resources as a hydro-geologist. Together, these docents have many years of
experience and have amazing knowledge to share with you.

20 miles ,45 minutes. Suggested donation to driver $3.

SPECIAL NOTES:
This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting: there are no restrooms,

benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need.

PICNIC LUNCH:
The hike ends at Raccoon Creek. Bring your lunch and picnic with our

docents.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:

1) If you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking  
2) Bring copy of your ID (driver's license) Health Card and an emergency contact name
and phone number with you on the hike   
3) Always bring 1 pair of shoes along with your hiking boots and a bag to store your dirty
hiking boots on the drive home. Pease be considerate of the driver’s car and wear your
clean shoes on the way home.
4) Wear sturdy shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, (we suggest long
pants), and a hat, mosquito repellent and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and a brown
bag lunch or snacks to enjoy along the way. Don’t forget your camera! Trekking poles
are always recommended.
