FROG LAKE OVERLOOK TRAIL
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2015

DIFFICULTY:  Strenuous

ELEVATION:  Starting elevation — 7195 feet.  Highest elevation at Frog Lake Overlook — 8653 feet.  Elevation gain — approx. 1700 feet.

HIKE DISTANCE:  Approx. 7.5 miles

GENERAL LOCATION:  At Donner Pass, starting at the Pacific Crest Trailhead, off Hwy. 80.

DESCRIPTION:  One hiking book states: “The panoramic views from Frog Lake Cliff more than compensate for the minor effort to reach it.”  Well, the reality is the views are fantastic, but the effort to reach the Overlook is actually MAJOR, not minor!! —— but definitely worth traversing the steep uphill sections.  The journey is fairly easy for the first 1 3/4ths miles toward Summit Lake, but veers north to the left onto the Warren Lake Trail where the steep climb begins. As the trail reaches a volcanic ridge, you get a “breather” to gaze at the views and a small granitic knoll or peak named 7888.  From there the stiff ascent continues until you reach a saddle where you turn right and go uphill 200 yards to Frog Lake Cliff.  Lunch will be on the granite rocks with Frog Lake 1000 feet below!

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 1 hour & 25 minutes driving time and 70 miles one way.  Return time to Lincoln — approximately 5:00 pm.  A donation of of $10 is suggested for riders. Driving directions — see below and print before coming to the hike, if driving.
