HIKE DISTANCE:  Approximately 8 miles.

GENERAL LOCATION:  Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA - - About 130 miles (2 hour, 30 minutes) from Sun City Lincoln Hills.

DESCRIPTION:  We will call it a walk in the Park.  Come enjoy parts of Golden Gate Park that you might not have seen before.  It's an Urban Park.  Full of paths and activity.  You could bring your golf clubs, bow and arrows, your frisbee, your remote control boat, your soccer ball, your equestrian gear and your fly fishing rod.  We will see venues in the park where all this equipment can be used, but don't bring it on this trip.  Save it for your next trip.

San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is one of the largest man-made parks in the world.  It is larger than New York City's Central Park.  Development began in 1870 on a 1,017 acre site consisting mostly of sand dunes.  The park is a 1/2 mile wide and extends west 4.5 miles from the Haight/Ashbury district to the Pacific Ocean.

Our hike will cover from the Pacific Ocean to the de Young Museum and back - about 8 miles or so.  That's approximately two-thirds of the park.  It is mostly level or slightly up and down.  Strawberry Hill on an island in the middle of Stow Lake is the only exception.  It has an elevation gain of only about 250 feet.  Monique - - there are only three short sets of stairs (that I can remember).  It will be a full day, but a worthwhile one. We will see buffalo and, maybe a raccoon or seven.  We actually saw seven at North Lake on the pre-hike.

TRAVEL TIME AND DISTANCE:  About 2 hours and 30 minutes driving time and 130 miles one way.  Hiking time about 4 to 5 hours.  If you don’t stop for dinner, your return to Lincoln Hills would be by about 6:30pm.  An option for dinner would be to dine at the Marin Brewing Company.  If you stop for dinner, expect to return to Lincoln Hills between 8:30pm and  9:00pm.  A donation of $18 is suggested for riders.
