INDEPENDENCE TRAIL WEST

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 1, 2016

DIFFICULTY: Moderate, fairly level

HIKE DISTANCE : 5.4 miles, minimum altitude gain

GENERAL LOCATION: East of Nevada City on Hwy 49

DESCRIPTION : This trail is our nation’s first wheel-chair accessible trail. It began as the Excelsior Ditch in 1859 and was used to transport water to mining areas near Grass Valley. Restored wooden flumes transport hikers across some deep gorges. The trail is mostly shaded and offers views of the Yuba River canyon.

RISKS: Very little poison oak was noted. If you see a California newt do not touch! The skin excretes a strong irritant.

TRAVEL TIME / DISTANCE : 1 hour and 15 minutes - 46 miles. $9 driver donation.

HIKE LEADER : Gary Adams    SWEEP: Ted Younis

SPECIAL NOTES:
 FACILITIES: Pit toilet at trailhead
