ISLAND LAKE - DESOLATION WILDERNESS

TUESDAY, JULY 28, 2015

Difficulty: Strenuous

Elevation gain: 6900' - 8150' (1250' gain)

Hike distance: 7.1 miles round trip

General location: 8 miles North of Hwy. 50 just past Kyburz

Description: A quintessential High Sierra hike with beautiful scenery - meadows, forests, creeks, small waterfalls, unnamed ponds, 4 lakes, large slabs of granite and jagged peaks in the distance.  After the 1st half-mile beside a meadow the trail becomes challenging - lots of roots, rocky run-off gullies, high rock steps, slippery, slanted granite, stream crossings on rocks, and very little shade.

Travel time/distance:  A little over 2 hours, 90 miles. This is a $15 driver donation.  Possibly some cars will stop at the Chinese Restaurant in Cameron Park to avoid rush hour traffic on the way home.  Without dinner, return to Lincoln should be around 6 PM.

Hike leaders/sweep:  Ed Murach, Barb Proffitt Sue Geisler

Special notes:  There is a pit toilet at the trailhead.  Lunch will be at a lake with practically no shade, but swimming is allowed.

     PREPARATION FOR HIKE:
        1) IF YOU HAVE ANY HEALTH ISSUES, PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR CONDITION BEFORE HIKING.
        2)  Bring a copy of your ID, health card info, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you on the hike.
        3)  Always bring a change of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy boots after the hike so you don’t get your driver's car dirty.
         4) Bring lunch

Risks - mosquitoes, too much sun, and tripping so 'MUST HAVES" include insect repellent, sun block, hat, lots of water, sturdy boots, and trekking poles.  It can be windy at Island Lake so you might want a light jacket.
