Loch Leven Lakes

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

ELEVATION : 6580' - 6880' with total 900' gain

HIKE DISTANCE: 6.8 miles

GENERAL LOCATION: Off I-80 at Yuba Gap

DESCRIPTION: This is one of the easiest ways to see 4 beautiful Sierra lakes nestled in granite basins.  We start with an initial climb of 200' and then have a few ups and downs, pass a pond and take the spur to Salmon Lake (full of catfish) for a snack break.  There are more ups and downs as we hike to Lower Loch Leven, go along the scenic shoreline of the Middle Lake and then continue on to High Loch Leven for lunch. Parts of the trail are quite rocky and sunny. We return on the same trail - not a loop.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: This is the trade-off for a less strenuous hike to the lakes. The last 6 miles are  on a winding dirt road. One and a half hour drive and 62 miles each way.  High-clearance vehicles are preferable.  Suggested contribution is $12 which allows a little extra for a car wash.

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP: Barb Proffitt / Ed Murach

SPECIAL NOTES: If you've never been to this awesome area, this is your chance.  If you have been, you know that it is worth a repeat.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: None so we will stop at Nyack.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:

1. Bring a copy of your ID (driver's license), Health Card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you when you hike.

2. If you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking.

3. Always bring two pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike.  Do not get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.

4. Sturdy boots are required and poles recommended. Bring lunch and plenty of water.

RISKS: Not enough drivers, 7000' elevation
