DIFFICULTY: Strenuous
ELEVATION GAIN: Starting elevation about 6,581 ft., Maggie’s South Peak is 8,699 ft. Total gain about 2,100 ft..
HIKE DISTANCE: 7.1 miles
GENERAL LOCATION: Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe
DESCRIPTION:
Maggie’s Peaks are one of the gateways to the Desolation
Wilderness. This is a very strenuous hike mostly in the
open. Maggie's Peaks South is a 7.1 mile moderately trafficked
loop beginning on the Eagle Lake Trail on Hwy 89 across from Emerald
Bay, Lake Tahoe. Much of the trail is rocky, exposed and open,
but has great views. Both North (8,499') and South (8,699') Peaks
overlook the blue waters of Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, Cascade Lake and
the Desolation Wilderness. The hike to the Peak is a giant
switchback from the Eagle Lake Trail then the Granite Lake Trail with a
scramble of 1000 ft. with 200 ft. of elevation gain to bag the peak. We
then descend to Bayview Campgrounds, with another Emerald Bay Overlook
along the way, followed by a one mile descent along Hwy 89 to get back
to the car(s).
