Sacramento Northern Trail – Rio Linda

Difficulty:     Option 1:     Easy - Trail is flat and paved and graveled  -  Distance  5.5 miles

                      Option 2:     Easy/Moderate - Trail is flat and paved and graveled  -  Distance  7.5 miles

 Elevation Gain:   Flat

Hike Distance:    approx. 5.5 miles Option 1 and 7.5 miles Option 2

General Location:    Rio Linda area

Description:    This is a in and out hike.  We begin the hike in Rio Linda and proceed south thru scenic mix grass lands, woods, and some sparse developed areas.  We will travel along short lengths of the Dry Creek and Linda Creek, and pass over several bridges crossing creeks and drainage channels.  The first 1.5 miles will be on a rail to trail route of the Sacramento Northern Railroad north of Sacramento.  We will diverge onto a levee along Linda Creek for another 1.25 mile.   Both Options will travel the same path, with Option 2 extended to Elverta end of the rail to trail.  We will car pool to pick up those wishing to proceed for the longer hike.    

Travel Time / Distance and Cost:    Travel time 35 minutes.  One way driving distance is approximately 20 miles.   This is a $3.00 donation to the driver.  Driving directions will be handed out to all drivers.  Parking is in the city park at the Rio Linda Elverta Recreation & Park center.

Special Notes:

Facilities: Facilities at the parking lot.          

Risks:  Insects may be present however not likely, bring a good insect repellant for precaution. The weather should be in the 50’s with possible brisk winds.  Bring layered clothing.  Could be a chance of light drizzle.

Lunch break: About 1 1/2 hour from trail head.

Preparation for Hike:

1.      Bring a copy of your ID (driver's license), Health Card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you when you hike.

2.      If you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking.

3.      Always bring 2 pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike.  DO NOT get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.

4.      Trekking poles are advised, along with lunch, snack, plenty of water and sun screen.

 

Risks:   Basically a flat paved and graveled path.  No significant risk.

Rain cancels the hike.  Check website the morning of the hike for any updates.

Meeting Place and Time:  Meet in Orchard Creek Parking Lot, Section 14 near the fitness center at 8:30 AM.                                             We Leave at 8:45 AM.  

Return:           Approx. 1:30 pm at Orchard Creek.
