Showers Lake
Thursday, July 29, 2010

DIFFICULTY: Strenuous

ELEVATION GAIN:
Showers lake is at 8664' altitude - 94' higher than the trailhead; however the accumulated altitude gain out and back is 1400'.

HIKE DISTANCE:
10.2 miles

GENERAL LOCATION:
Carson Pass on Highway 88

DESCRIPTION: This hike is part of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is a gorgeous hike. We have views of Lake Tahoe in the distance. We pass through the headwaters of the Upper Truckee River (a creek at this elevation) - through forest and expansive meadows. The middle part of the hike, through Miess Meadows is quite flat. If the timing is right, there are great spreads of wildflowers on this hike. Showers Lake is a beautiful granite-rimmed alpine lake.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 2 ½ hours – 110 miles - an $18 contribution to driver

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP: David/Monique Wood

SPECIAL NOTES:

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Restrooms at trailhead and nearby Carson Pass ranger station.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE: Read the Hiking Guidelines on this website. Hiking poles highly advised – there are several creek crossings. Bring lunch, plenty of water, and snacks. Be prepared to buy dinner if we are late returning.  Our plan will be to stop at Papa Gianni's Ristorante in Cameron Park on the way home.  We have been there before - the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and they can handle our smelly crowd.

RISKS: Altitude and distance are factors to consider.  If you have any problems with exertion at high altitude, avoid this hike.
