Truckee River Trail

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

DIFFICULTY: Moderate

ELEVATION GAIN: Difference between high and low points is less than 100 feet. Elevation at trail head about 6000 ft.

HIKE DISTANCE: 7 miles

GENERAL LOCATION: Along Highway 89, between Alpine Meadows and Tahoe City

DESCRIPTION: This is a very pleasant out and back hike along the Truckee River to Tahoe City. The trail begins near Alpine Meadows Road, in a small parking lot about 100 yards past the Alpine Meadows turn-off. The parking here is limited, but should be enough for our group. The trail closely follows the Truckee River, and is mostly below the level of Route 89, and is paved.  Mostly in the shared, so does offer beautiful views and cool breezes. We will walk past cabins that range from elegant to adequate, and usually will have views of rafters enjoying the sun and splash. As we enter Tahoe City, we will pass a restaurant (The Bridge Tender) that adjoins the trail where we can stop for lunch. Those who prefer can continue across 89 to a picnic area by the Gatekeeper’s Museum.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 1 3/4 hours each way. One way distance is about 90 miles. This is a $15 driver donation. Please have the correct bills. Detailed driving directions will be handed out to all drivers. We plan to return home before 4:00 pm.

HIKE LEADER / SWEEP:  Phil Huntingdale / Stephanie Huntingdale, Questions?  408-1747

SPECIAL NOTES: This trail is heavily used during summer by walkers and hikers.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: None at the trail head. We plan to stop at the Shell Station or McDonalds in Truckee on the way (Deerfield Drive, off 89).
