CASTLE PEAK
Tuesday, August 30, 2016

DIFFICULTY: Extreme

ELEVATION GAIN: Starting elevation about 7,200 ft., Castle Peak 9,103 ft.  Total gain about 2,600 ft. including Basin Peak.

HIKE DISTANCE: 9.5 miles

GENERAL LOCATION: Interstate 80 near Donner summit, Boreal Ridge Rd - Exit# 176

DESCRIPTION: This is a very strenuous hike mostly in the sun. This mostly volcanic northern section of the Sierras boasts fascinating rock formations with ramparts and turrets.  The aptly named Castle Peak features expansive views in clear weather as far as Mt. Lassen, Mt. Diablo, and the Desolation Wilderness.  We will walk along a dusty road before joining the PCT and ascending to Castle Pass and then turning east to summit the peak where we will enjoy the views.  Then we will traverse a spectacular ridge to Basin Peak for more great views while enjoying lunch, returning on a use trail to the PCT just north of Round Valley and the Peter Grubb hut.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: About 1 hour 20 min. – 78 miles each way. Suggested donation to driver  $12. We should return to Lincoln by about 6:00 pm.

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP:  Gay Mackintosh and Ed Murach

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Plan to stop at Nyack Rd - Exit# 156 Shell Station & Burger King.

RISKS: Portions of the trail beyond the Pass are very steep with loose shale and not well marked. May be windy.
