MONROE RIDGE TRAIL - TOWN OF COLOMA

ELEVATION GAIN:
Minimal


HIKE DISTANCE: 2.8 mile loop.


GENERAL LOCATION:
Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, on Highway 49 south of Auburn.


DESCRIPTION:
Spend a day in Coloma! We will hike in the coolness of morning (some shade on the trail) and visit the James Marshall Monument, his cabin, chapel and historical cemetery. Then we will visit the Nature Center and have lunch at a local Deli (good ice cream too) Cool off at the Gold Discovery Museum and if it isn't too hot by then see the outdoor exhibits like Miners Cabin, Man Lee Mining Exhibit and Wah Hop Store. On the way back to the parking lot we pass by the Sawmill Replica, Mormon Cabin and the actual spot where J. Marshall discovered Gold.

 

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: Approximately 66 miles – 1 hour.  Plan on a $6 contribution for the driver.  There is also a $5 parking fee, unless you have a California State Park pass.

SPECIAL NOTES:

This could be a short or long day, depending on how much you want to see. Please coordinate with your car pool. We will plan be back no later than 3 PM.  Since this hike is at low altitude, it will be cancelled in the case of triple-digit weather.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Public facilities available in park.
PREPARATION FOR HIKE:
Either athletic shoes or hiking boots acceptable. Bring plenty of water, hat, sunscreen etc.  Also bring money for lunch (or bag it if you must).
