American River Confluence

Loop from the Park Headquarters

December, 13, 2007

DIFFICULTY: Moderate – some steep assents

ELEVATION GAIN:
About 400 feet – max. altitude about 1000 feet

HIKE DISTANCE:
Approximately 5+ miles

GENERAL LOCATION:
Auburn State Recreation Area – start at the park Headquarters

DESCRIPTION:
An interesting loop hike from the park headquarters to the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Part of the hike is along the old right-of-way of the railroad that carried limestone from the quarry to market. Much of the hike is through oak forests. There are views of the American River, of several bridges, and a waterfall. Parts of the hike are quite level – being along the right-of-way and along the old stagecoach trail. These easy parts are punctuated by some steep climbs.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: About ½ hour – 15 miles - $3 for the driver.

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP:
David and Monique Wood

SPECIAL NOTES:

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Restrooms are available in the park headquarters.
PREPARATION FOR HIKE:
Hiking poles would be useful. Bring boots, water, and a snack. If the morning is cold, then layer your clothes.

RISKS: At this elevation, poison oak is always a possibility. On the prehike we saw very little.

LUNCH: We will not stop on the hike for lunch, but plan to have lunch afterwards at Awful Annie’s in Auburn. The hike should be over about 11:30.

RAIN: Hike will be rescheduled if there is rain on the day of the hike, or on the day before the hike.
