The first 1/4 mile has the steepest gradient, but affords great views of the North Fork of the American River.  The trail gains 800 feet in 2 miles.  The different branches of the trail differ greatly in difficulty - we hike on Stagecoach Trail, Upper Stagecoach Trail, Flood Trail, and Mossy Branch Trail.  Some are a bit rocky and muddy, many are relatively easy with short ups and downs, but there are also fairly steep ups and downs  There is a large variety of topography. Along most of the trail we will have lots of opportunity to view the features of the confluence area: North and Middle Forks of the American River, the Foresthill Bridge, and other bridges.

This is a relatively short hike, and some hikers may want to have lunch in Auburn, rather than returning directly home.  When we carpool, we will try and set up cars accordingly.
