Lizzo Weight Loss Journey: How She Found Peace Through Health & Mindset

Lizzo has never been one to sugarcoat things—and she’s not about to start now.

During a TikTok Live on April 22, the Grammy-winning artist got real with her fans about something deeply personal: her weight loss journey. At 36, Lizzo isn’t chasing a number on a scale or trying to fit anyone’s beauty standard. She’s working on herself—physically, emotionally, and mentally. And she’s letting us in on what that process really looks like.

It started back in 2023

This wasn’t an overnight decision. Lizzo shared that she’s been on this journey since 2023. In January, she told fans on Instagram that she had reduced her body mass index by 10.5 points and lost 16% of her body fat. That’s no small feat.

But for Lizzo, it wasn’t just about numbers. It was about understanding her body and taking control of how she treats it.

Food became a focus—but not in the way you might think

Lizzo made it clear that she’s not into food restriction or crash dieting. Her approach is much more thoughtful. She started paying close attention to what she eats, especially in the mornings. One of her big shifts? Cutting out sugary breakfast foods.

“I do something sweet. It’s gotta be with some sort of carb,” she explained. Her go-to? Almond butter and toast. Something simple. Something that works for her.

She stressed that every body is different. What works for one person might not work for another. But one thing she believes is pretty universal? Calories in versus calories out.

“That’s just how the human body works,” she said.

Starbucks and hidden calories

At one point, Lizzo revealed she was drinking up to three large Starbucks drinks a day. Once she realized those drinks could add up to 1,200 calories daily, she knew she had to make a change.

It wasn’t just about weight. It was about how those drinks affected her whole system. She decided to stop drinking coffee altogether—not just to cut calories but to regulate her nervous system.

For Lizzo, it was a big moment of realization. These small habits had a big impact on her energy, her mindset, and even her mood.

Learning how to deal with binging

“I had to start applying a calorie deficit,” Lizzo said. Why? Because she realized she had a tendency to binge. A calorie deficit—where you burn more calories than you consume—helped her regain some balance.

Now, she’s not a fan of obsessively counting calories. But she uses calorie tracking as a way to stay aware—especially in a country where high-calorie, low-nutrition foods are everywhere.

“I don’t think it’s healthy to count calories,” she admitted. “I use it as a tool to fight against the American food system.”

Anxiety played a big role too

Lizzo didn’t stop at the physical stuff. She dove deep into how her mental health shaped her journey. Over the years, anxiety has been something she’s worked hard to manage.

“I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years,” she said. And a big part of her progress came from learning to quiet the noise and focus on herself.

“I meditated. I calmed myself down. And I isolated a little bit—but not like made myself lonely, not the way I used to when I was depressed.”

This time, the isolation wasn’t about retreating into sadness. It was mindful. It was healing.

She explained how she used to distract herself with food, with people, with problems. That’s a pattern so many people can relate to. And she’s done with it.

“I stopped doing that,” she said. “I just focused on me.”

The result? She feels lighter—inside and out

This wasn’t just about dropping body fat or changing how she eats. For Lizzo, the real transformation came from within. Changing her habits helped her feel better, sure—but changing her mindset changed everything.

She described feeling “lighter, energetically and emotionally.” And that shift shows.

It’s not about looking different. It’s about feeling different. Stronger. Calmer. More grounded.

No quick fixes, just real talk

Lizzo’s honesty is what makes her story powerful. She’s not selling a magic weight loss secret. She’s not showing off a flawless before-and-after. She’s just being herself—open, vulnerable, and real.

She’s figuring it out, like the rest of us. She’s trying things, learning what works, and letting go of what doesn’t. And she’s using her platform to remind everyone that taking care of your body and your mind is an act of self-love—not punishment.

Whether she’s dancing on stage, shutting down trolls, or sipping almond butter toast instead of caramel lattes, Lizzo is still Lizzo. She’s just doing it all a little lighter now.
