Aberystwyth. Try saying that three times fast. It’s a mouthful, yeah, but this little town on the west coast of Wales is one of my favorite places in the UK. It’s chill, full of character, and has a bit of everything. History, seaside views, cute cafes, old-school arcades… you name it.

1. Walk the Aberystwyth Promenade
Let’s start simple. The promenade is the long walkway right next to the sea. It’s the kind of place you go when you just want to take it easy. You’ll see families eating chips, students with coffee, and maybe even a brave soul swimming in the freezing cold water.
At the end of the prom, there’s a tradition. Locals call it “kicking the bar.” There’s an actual metal bar at the north end of the prom, and people give it a good kick for good luck. Weird, but fun.
Pro tip: Go at sunset. The colors over the sea are next level.
2. Take the Cliff Railway up Constitution Hill
Feeling lazy but still want a view? Take the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway. It’s one of the oldest electric funicular railways in the UK, and it takes you all the way up Constitution Hill.
Once you’re at the top, boom, you get this insane view of the bay and town. There’s a café up there too, so grab a tea or a scone and soak it all in. If you’re feeling up for it, there’s also a camera obscura. Sounds fancy, right? It’s basically a giant lens that shows you a live image of the surrounding area.
3. Explore the Ruins of Aberystwyth Castle
This one’s for the history nerds. But even if you’re not big on castles, Aberystwyth Castle ruins are still cool to check out. It’s right by the sea and perfect for some moody Instagram shots.
The castle was built back in the 1200s, and though it’s mostly ruins now, the vibe is still strong. You’ll find info signs that tell you the wild stuff that went down here. Think battles, sieges, and loads of drama.

4. Chill at South Beach
Aberystwyth has two main beaches: North Beach and South Beach. North gets all the attention because it’s near the prom, but South Beach is quieter and feels more local.
There’s soft sand, little rock pools, and fewer crowds. Great spot for a beach picnic or just to lie down and listen to the waves. Bring a jumper though. Welsh weather is a bit moody.
Oh, and if you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins out at sea. Yep, actual dolphins.
5. Visit the National Library of Wales
Okay, hear me out. I know “library” doesn’t sound exciting. But The National Library of Wales is actually one of the most important buildings in the country. Plus, the architecture is gorgeous.
Inside, they’ve got rare books, art exhibitions, and loads of Welsh history. You don’t have to be a bookworm to enjoy it. There’s usually something cool going on. I once saw a photography show there that blew my mind.
And the views from outside the library? Just wow. You can see most of Aber from up there.
6. Grab a Bite at the Town’s Indie Cafes
Aberystwyth is a uni town, so it’s packed with cafes that aren’t your usual Starbucks vibe. Think mismatched chairs, fairy lights, and cakes made with love.

7. Hike to Pen Dinas Hill Fort
If you’re up for a walk and don’t mind a bit of a climb, head up to Pen Dinas Hill Fort. It’s got this huge Wellington Monument at the top that you can see from town.
The hike is peaceful and gives you serious countryside feels. At the top, the view is bananas. You get green hills, the town below, and the ocean stretching out like a painting.
It’s windy up there though. Like, hold-onto-your-hat kind of windy.
8. Ride the Vale of Rheidol Railway
This is one for the train lovers. The Vale of Rheidol Railway is an old-school steam train that runs from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge. Yeah, that’s the real name. Sounds mysterious, right?
The ride takes about an hour and a bit, and the views are next level. Think forests, rivers, waterfalls, and rolling hills.
At Devil’s Bridge, you can explore the waterfalls and go for a mini hike. There’s a pub too if you’re after some chips and a pint before heading back.
9. Browse the Local Shops on Great Darkgate Street
This is the main shopping street in Aber. And no, it’s not all big chains. You’ve got quirky bookshops, old-school sweet shops, and some cute boutiques with handmade stuff.
One of my favorites is Bookshop by the Sea. It’s tiny but packed with personality. There’s also a place called Siop y Pethe that sells Welsh gifts and crafts.
It’s fun just walking around with a coffee in hand and window shopping. Plus, you never know what little gem you’ll find.
10. Catch a Film or Show at Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Last one on the list, and it’s a good one. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is part of the university campus, but it’s open to everyone. They’ve got cinema screenings, live music, theatre, and even art exhibitions.
It’s honestly one of the best arts centres in Wales. I saw a live folk band here once and the vibe was just magical. Plus, the seats are actually comfy, which is always a win.
