Bobelaine Audubon Sanctuary Hike
Tuesday, March 10, 2020

DIFFICULTY: Easy

ELEVATION GAIN: Negligible

HIKE DISTANCE:  5 miles, figure 8 loop

GENERAL LOCATION: Off Hwy 99 on the Feather River, near Nicolaus, 23 miles west of Lincoln.

DESCRIPTION:  A nearby hidden jewel, Bobelaine is a 430-acre wildlife sanctuary along the Feather River owned by the National Audubon Society.  The land was donated in 1975 by Bob and Elaine Crandall.  A “State Ecological Reserve,” this is a rare remnant of the riparian forests that once projected two to five miles on either side of the rivers in the Central Valley of California, before construction of levees and canals.  Over 190 species of birds have been observed, including Black-Crowned Night Herons, Wood Ducks and Swanson's Hawks. Mammal inhabitants include fox, deer, river otters, beaver, muskrat, skunk, and raccoon. Five miles of grassy trails run through climax oak forest and open grassland, by sloughs and mixed riparian woodland, to the bank of the Feather River. We will have a snack or early lunch on the sandy riverbank—two benches only, so bring plastic to sit on.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: About 35 minutes and 24 miles each way. (Passenger donation of $3 to driver suggested.)
