BURMA ROAD TRAIL
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22,  2011

DIFFICULTY:  Easy to moderate.  Note:  Our hike rating states "easy --- hikes up to five miles".  This hike is easy because it is primarily level with a few inclines, but it is long in mileage --- 6 1/2 miles.  Hence, it is more accurate to say "easy to moderate"  for difficulty.

ELEVATION:  Starting and ending elevation --- approximately 300 feet

HIKE DISTANCE:  6 1/2 miles  out and back (not a loop)

GENERAL LOCATION:  Outside the city of Oroville

DESCRIPTION:  The Burma Road trail winds along the Feather River from a short distance above the Thermalito Diversion Dam to the Oroville Dam spillway.  It is a very pleasant and scenic hike with great views of the Feather River!  The roadbed-trail is small gravel dirt type and rocky, no pavement.  Bring your binoculars ---- hopefully we will catch sighting of some wildlife --- birds, ducks, geese.  This outing will be hiked at a relaxed pace so that we can enjoy the surroundings!   Lunch will be at an area to the side and below the spillway --- bring a plastic bag or old towel to sit on.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  1 hour & 15 minutes driving time and approximately 58 miles one way.  Return time to Lincoln will be between 3:00 and 3:30 pm.  A donation of $9 is suggested for riders.  Driving directions ---- see below and please print before coming to the hike, if driving.

HIKE LEADER:  Sue Geisler   SWEEP:  Rosemarie Gutmann

        3)  Always bring 2 pairs of shoes along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike.  DO NOT get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty         boots on the drive home.
        4)  Bring lunch, water, hiking boots, gloves, warm & layered clothing if windy or cold weather, and trekking poles (not really necessary for this hike, although this  leader will be using her poles and always recommends them!).

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:   Take Hwy. 65 north through Lincoln toward Marysville.  Note:  Hwy. 65 becomes Hwy. 70 before reaching Marysville.  DRIVE CAREFULLY ON HWY. 65 OUTSIDE LINCOLN --- WITH YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON!
In Marysville, follow the signs --- staying on Hwy. 70 --- through the town --- which means turning right at 9th Street, then left on B Street (which is the same as Hwy. 70).
Continue driving north to Oroville.  Take the Grand Avenue exit (but DO NOT go onto Grand Avenue) and follow 3rd Street (paralleling Hwy. 70) to Nelson Ave.  Turn right onto Nelson Avenue to the intersection of Table Mountain Blvd. and Cherokee Road.  Cross Table Mountain Blvd. and drive onto Cherokee Road to Burma Road.  When you see Thompson Flat Road on your LEFT (there is also a Thompson Flat Road on your right!),  watch for Burma Road on the right--- which is a short steep dirt road down to the river's edge --- it can be missed if you are not watching carefully!
