DEER CREEK TRIBUTE TRAIL WEST
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29,
2014
DIFFICULTY: Moderate --- trail has ups & downs as well as flat
sections.
ELEVATION: Highest point --- approx. 2700 feet. Lowest point
--- approx. 2500 feet.
HIKE DISTANCE: Approximately 7 miles --- (not a
loop hike)
GENERAL LOCATION: Starting in Nevada City and going along
scenic trails outside the city.
DESCRIPTION: The Deer Creek Tribute
Trail is a wonderful trail starting from the main street in Nevada City and
traversing out into the wooded sections of the city. The trail follows Deer
Creek, the historic Newtown Canal, and has a side trail to Stocking Flat, an
area memorializing the contributions of the native Nisenan and Chinese people to
the history of the place. A bridge across the creek allows access to a 0.6 mile
wooded loop with views overlooking the canyon and creek. We will have lunch at
Stocking Flat and also enjoy the interpretive panels. A unique feature
of this trail is that on Sept. 7, 2013, Art on Site (AOS) unveiled their first
public art works project with the purpose of bringing people and the natural
environment together in an innovative and artistic way. There are signs with
poems and sites with sculptures. The works make for stimulating
conversation!! Since we will be parking near the main shopping district
of Nevada City, hikers may wish to do some Christmas shopping after the
hike. If you choose to do shopping, be sure you are riding in a car with all
persons who also plan to shop.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 40 miles one way
and one hour driving time. Return time to Lincoln --- approximately 3:30 pm. A
donation of $6 is suggested for riders. Driving directions --- see below and
please print before coming to the hike, if driving.
