EDWARDS CROSSING TO PURDON CROSSING THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13,
2012
DIFFICULTY: Strenuous, due to length of trail.
ELEVATION
GAIN: Trailhead is about 2000 feet. Net gain, with several ups and downs, is
500 feet.
HIKE DISTANCE: According to the posted sign --- 9 miles (in
& out, not a loop)
GENERAL LOCATION: South Yuba River State Park
area, north of Nevada City
DESCRIPTION: When have you listened to the
wonderful rushing sound of a river the entire time you are hiking? That is the
most unique feature of this hike!! The hike starts at the Edwards Crossing
Bridge and travels 4.5 miles to the historic Purdon Crossing Bridge following
the South Yuba River, hence hikers are treated to the marvelous river serenade
while hiking to and from the bridges. The area is forested yet there are some
open areas with stunning views of the river and rocky cliffs. Check out the
prehike photos! The trail is narrow, one person-wide and has lots of leaf
litter so it is only slightly muddy after rains. Because of the forest
environment and considerable shade it can be quite cool and damp if temperatures
are low. Nevertheless, this is a very pleasant trail to hike due to the variety
of ups and downs.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: Approximately 1 hour & 30
minutes driving time one way which includes a bathroom stop at the Tahoe
National Forest office. Distance is approximately 48 miles. A donation of $9
is suggested for riders. Return time to Lincoln is approximately 5:00 pm.
Driving directions --- see below and print before coming to the hike, if

HEALTH ISSUES, PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR CONDITION BEFORE HIKING. 2) Bring
a copy of your ID (driver's license), health card, and an emergency contact name
and phone number with you on the hike. 3) Always bring 2 pairs of
shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty boots after the hike.
DO NOT get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive
home. 4) Bring lunch, water, hiking boots, trekking poles
(recommended!), and gloves to keep your hands warm if temps are
cold!
RISKS: Trail has steep drop-offs on one side, hence trekking poles
