Memorial Overland Emigrant Trail Hike

DIFFICULTY:  
Moderate

ELEVATION GAIN: 
  Summit Station Trailhead is at 6,800 feet.  The loop
will drop about 150’ and gain approximately 400’ during the hike from the
starting elevation.

HIKE DISTANCE: 
  Approximately 5.5 miles round-trip loop

GENERAL LOCATION:   Tahoe National Forest trails adjacent to Serene Lakes, between Summit Station and Kilborn Lake.  Soda Springs (exit 174),
follow signs to Royal Gorge (trailhead is across from Royal Gorge Lodge).

DESCRIPTION: 
  The first half of the loop follows Big Ben and Palisades trails
west from the Summit Station through forest and occasional meadows.  The return loop follows the Memorial Overland Emigrant Trail through the forest, providing views of Devil’s Peak and Serene Lakes along the way.  You can also expect to see wildflowers and two abandoned rope tows near the trails.
Expect mostly shaded walking on dirt trails with short segments on rock or gravel.  We can stop for pictures or a snack break along the way and end with
lunch at the Summit Station starting point.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:
Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes (70 miles).  Suggested driver contribution $ 12.00

FACILITIES AVAILABLE:   
Porta-potty at Summit Station Trailhead.   Also, restroom at the new Soda Springs General Store on Donner Pass Road (they have snacks, sandwiches, draft beer, etc. available for purchase and tables to sit). 

RISKS:  Some mosquitos in areas where the trail is still damp.  Stay hydrated.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:

1) If you have any health issues please consider your condition before hiking.
2) Bring a copy of your ID (drivers license), health card, and a name and phone number of an emergency contact person.
3) Bring another pair of shoes with your hiking boots, along with a bag to store your dirty gear.  Please be considerate of your driver’s car and wear clean shoes home.
4) Bring water, lunch, sunscreen. Trekking poles are useful for some segments.
