GROUSE, HEMLOCK and SMITH LAKES

TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2014

Difficulty: Strenuous

Elevation Gain: 6900' - 8725'  (1825' gain)

Hike Distance: 6.4 miles in-and-out

General Location: Twin Lakes Trailhead at Wrights Lake - 8 miles N. of Hwy.50 just past Kyburz

Description:  This hike has 3 lakes with gorgeous backdrops, beautiful scenery and some panoramic viewpoints. The hike is in and out - not a loop.  After the 1st half mile along a meadow, the trail becomes challenging -  most of it is rocky including some big steps, big surface roots, stretches with no shade and basically constantly UP on the way in with one rocky stream crossing.  But we will not be trying to set any speed records.

Travel Time/Distance: 2 hours, 90 miles. Donation to the driver is $15.  Possibly some cars will stop at the Chinese Restaurant in Cameron Park on the way home to avoid rush hour traffic.  Without dinner, return to Lincoln should be 6 - 6:30 PM.

Hike Leaders/Sweep:  Ed Murach and Barb Proffitt

Preparation for hike:

1)    Bring a copy of your ID (driver’s license), health card, and emergency contact name and phone number with you when you hike.

4)    Bring lunch and water.  Trekking poles are always recommended but not required.

Risks:  Mosquitoes, too much sun/heat and tripping so "MUST HAVES" include insect repellent, sunblock, hat, lots of water and trekking poles.

Special Notes: Pit toilet at the trailhead.  Bring a hearty snack as lunch at Smith Lake might be a little late.
