Johnny Cash Trail and Folsom Prison Museum
Tuesday, May 11, 2021
DIFFICULTY: Moderate.
ELEVATION GAIN: Approximately 800 feet. Most of the trail is level with rolling hills.
HIKE DISTANCE: 7 miles, out and back (not a loop).
GENERAL LOCATION: Starting in the city of Folsom with free parking at the indoor garage on Leidersdorff St. across from Karen’s Restaurant.
DESCRIPTION:
The Johnny Cash Trail is a relatively new Class I bike trail that
connects to the Folsom Lake Trail. The trail connects not only
two of the area’s beautiful waterways – the American River and Folsom
Lake – but also two places of historic interest: Historic Folsom
District and Folsom Prison. The first portion of the trail opened
in 2014. In 2017, a branch off the main trail near Robbers’
Ravine Bridge was opened. On our return toward Folsom from the
Johnny Cash Bridge, we will use the new branch to visit the Folsom
Prison Museum. You can view the planned art on
folsomcasharttrail.com.
This is a marked, wide, paved trail shared with cyclists. Pedestrians walk on the left, facing the fast moving bicycles.
We'll
start and end our hike at Karen's, right across from the parking
garage. It is estimated that we will be finishing the hike
between 2:00 and 2:30pm. It is suggested that you bring a snack
or lunch whether you plan to eat in Folsom or not. Karen’s is a
good place for lunch/early dinner. Old Town Folsom has other
lunch/dinner options in case Karen’s is too crowded. Those not
wanting to stay for lunch should ride in the same car. If you do
not eat in Folsom after the hike, it is estimated that we will arrive
back in Lincoln Hills between 2:45 and 3:30 pm.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:
23 miles one way, 40-45 minutes driving time. A donation of $3 is
suggested for riders. If you plan to visit the Folsom Prison
Museum, bring $2 for admission.
