KENNY RANCH TRAILS THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2013
DIFFICULTY:
Easy
ELEVATION: Approximately 2500 feet at start of hike; and one climb
of 114 feet. Some sections are level.
HIKE DISTANCE: Approximately 5
miles
GENERAL LOCATION: A short distance from the town of Grass
Valley
DESCRIPTION: Kenny Ranch Trails are a combination of two trails,
Rough and Ready Ditch Trail and Wildflower Ridge Trail, which offer a very
pleasant forested hike, partly along an old mining ditch with running water, and
then uphill to a ridge. It is possible to do a loop hike but the plan is to
hike one way and then return the same way. After the hike we will drive a short
distance into Grass Valley where we will eat lunch at picnic tables in Glenn
Jones Park alongside Wolf Creek. Then we will have the special treat of a
docent-led tour of the North Star Mining Museum which is located next to the
Park. This is an amazing museum operated by the Nevada County Historical
Society in buildings first built for the North Star Mine in 1895. One building
houses the world's largest Pelton wheel --- quite a sight to behold!
Come and
enjoy a really wonderful outing --- a hike and then a historical tour! The tour
plus personal time to view the exhibits will last about an hour.
Note:
If you wish to only do the hike and skip the museum, it is suggested that you
drive in a car with others of the same mind, or drive your own car. But --
before you decide, consider this thought --- THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS HIKE IS THE
MUSEUM!!
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 1 hour driving time and 40 miles one
way. Return time to Lincoln --- approximately 3:00 pm. A donation of $6 is
suggested for riders. There is no fee for the museum, but a donation of any
amount is appreciated --- there is a small box in the museum office for
donations. The museum is operated entirely by volunteers. Driving directions
--- see below and print before coming to the hike, if driving.
