LITTLE BALD MOUNTAIN LOOP

DIFFICULTY:   Moderate

ELEVATION GAIN:  Trailhead about 6700, high point 7200; total elevation gain about 1000 feet.

HIKE DISTANCE:  5½ miles

GENERAL LOCATION:  Trailhead at Robinson Flat Campground, at the far eastern end of Foresthill Road.

DESCRIPTION:  Loop to Forest Service lookout (we may be able to go inside and view maps) and rocky outcrops on Little Bald Mountain boast amazing 360-degree views of distant mountain ranges and deep valleys. If weather is clear, view south to Tinker Knob, east to snowy peaks toward Lake Tahoe, north to Castle Peak, SW to Mount Diablo. A huge pay-off for a relatively short hike!

TRAVEL TIME/RETURN TIME TO LINCOLN HILLS:  Driving time 60+ miles, 1½  hours each way.  Narrow, winding, very scenic road after town of Foresthill. Return about 4 PM.  Based on length of the drive, a donation of $12 to drivers is recommended. Detailed driving directions below.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE: 

  1. Bring a copy of your ID (driver's license), Health Card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you when you hike.
  2. If you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking.
  3. Always bring 2 pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike.  DO NOT get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.
  4. Hiking boots required, poles advised for the rocky top of Little Bald Mountain. Much of trail is fairly soft surface but with loose rocky areas on return ascent to parking area. Bring lunch and water. Trail traverses both shady forest and open ridge; wear sunscreen and bring insect repellant. Rain jacket is always advisable in the mountains.


RISKS:  Care must be taken on mountain road and rocky outcrops. Drop-dead views. Altitude will affect some hikers.
