Loch Leven Lakes
Thursday, Aug 5, 2021
DIFFICULTY: Strenuous
ELEVATION: 5800' - 6880' with total 1500' gain
HIKE DISTANCE: 8.0
miles
GENERAL LOCATION: Off I-80 at Soda Springs – Exit 166
DESCRIPTION: See three beautiful glacially formed Sierra lakes nestled in
granite basins. There are several fallen trees and many parts of the trail
are quite rocky making it a challenge at times. There is also plenty of sun
with little shade around the lakes. We return on the same trail - not a loop.
We start with an initial climb of 250' and then a down & up
to get to a small bridge then the UPRR tracks. After crossing the tracks, the
trail becomes steeper, going up 900’ in 1.25 miles with nice scenery, a seasonal
pond, tiny streams and distant views.
After arriving at the Lower Lake the hike becomes easier though
there are still ups and downs. We hike along the gorgeous Lower and Middle
Lakes then ascend to the Upper Lake for lunch. We return using the same
trail.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 1.25 hours and over 60 miles each way. Suggested
contribution is $12.
HIKE LEADER/SWEEP: Barb Proffitt / Ed Murach
SPECIAL NOTES: We could have a group take extra time to get
up the first 2.5 miles. Seeing the 3 lakes nestled in granite are worth the
time and effort. More time may be necessary on descent too.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE: There are pit toilets at the trailhead.
PREPARATION FOR HIKE:
1. Bring a copy of your ID (driver's license),
Health Card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you when you
hike.
2. If you have any health issues, please
consider your condition before hiking.
3. Always bring two pairs of shoes, along with a
plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike. Do not
get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.
4. Sturdy boots required and poles highly recommended.
Bring lunch and plenty of water.
RISKS: Many rocky sections of trail, 7000' elevation
