MARIN HEADLANDS HIKE

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2012

DIFFICULTY:  Approaching moderately strenuous

ELEVATION:  Approx. 1000 feet gain on the Miwok-Wolf Ridge-Coastal Trail and 350 feet gain on the Rodeo Beach to Point Bonita Lighthouse.

HIKE DISTANCE:  5.2 mile loop on the Miwok to Coastal Trail and 3.7 miles from Rodeo Beach to Point Bonita Lighthouse and back.  The total for both hikes would be 8.9 miles.  An option would be to drive to the lighthouse parking lot and walk a short distance to the lighthouse to shorten the second hike.

GENERAL LOCATION:  Marin Headlands

DESCRIPTION:  The Marin Headlands hike consists of two hikes.  The first, the Miwok-Wolf Ridge- Coastal Trail hike, is one of the best ridge hikes in the Marin Headlands.  Along the way you will be in grassland and coastal scrub and see great views of the Pacific and of the Golden Gate from the top of the hill above Rodeo Beach.  Other highlights will be a walk through Fort Cronkhite, a former military post, which was established during WWII and used through the Cold War, Hill 88, a former Nike missile radar station hilltop, and Battery Townsley, a WWII underground bunker system.

The second hike, Rodeo Beach to Point Bonita Lighthouse, explores the beach, coastal area and old military forts and includes a self-guided tour of the lighthouse.  If we find ourselves short on time, we could drive to the lighthouse parking lot and walk from there.  The lighthouse is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 12:30 to 3:30pm.

LUNCH:  Bring your lunch as well as trail snacks.  Once we have completed the Miwok to Coastal Trail hike we will have lunch at the picnic tables at Rodeo Beach.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  Two hours and 20 minutes driving time one way.  Hiking time approximately 3 hours for the Miwok to Coastal Trail and 1 ½ to 2 hours to go to Point Bonita Lighthouse and back.  An option for dinner would be the Marin Brewing Company at Larkspur Landing.  We would be returning to Lincoln around 7 or 8pm.  The one-way distance is about 126 miles.  Based upon the length of the drive, a suggested contribution for gas would be $18.  Detailed driving directions will be handed out to all drivers.
