NEWCASTLE AND AUBURN CANALS

DIFFICULTY:  Moderate.

ELEVATION GAIN: Less than 100 feet

HIKE DISTANCE: Hike 7 miles along canals and trails, mostly dirt, a few sidewalks.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: From Railhead Park in Auburn, hike along the Shirland Canal and Western States Trail to the top of Cardiac Hill. Possible views of the Sierra Nevada and American River. Return along the Shirland Canal. Then walk up to American River Overlook Park and hike along the Newcastle Canal to upper Auburn. Return to Railhead Park through Auburn, passing Placer High School, home of the Hillmen and Hillwomen.

FOOD AND WATER: Bring water and a snack or lunch.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  About 25 minutes to drive 15 miles one way. Donation of $3 is suggested for riders. Directions will be handed out to all drivers.

FACILITIES:  Rest rooms at Railhead Park and American River Overlook Park.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:  Sturdy boots or walking shoes are recommended.

IF YOU HAVE HEALTH ISSUES, CONSIDER YOUR CONDITION BEFORE HIKING.

BRING THE FOLLOWING: Bring a copy of your ID (driver's license), health card, and an emergency contact name and phone number with you on the hike.

ABOUT YOUR FOOTWEAR: Always bring two pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty hiking boots after the hike.  Do not get your driver's car dirty by wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.

RISKS:  Watch for traffic when crossing roadways. Trails may be muddy if it has rained.
