Nimbus Fish Hatchery to Fair Oaks Bridge
Thursday, November 30, 2017
DIFFICULTY: Easy/Moderate
ELEVATION GAIN: Mostly flat with some small ups and downs
HIKE DISTANCE: Around 5 miles
GENERAL LOCATION: Lake Natomas/Folsom
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
We
will begin our hike from the Nimbus Fish Hatchery parking lot.
The hike will be along the American River Parkway Trail. It is a
10 foot wide paved bike trail with shoulders for hiking. Once
past the hatchery the trail parallels the American River. Views
of the river show from time to time while walking through oak
woodlands. It is a beautiful trail and bird life is commonly
seen. We will stop for a snack at the Fair Oaks Pedestrian
Bridge. Those that wish can walk up onto the bridge for grand
views up and down the river. The hike will return back along the
paved trail. Depending on how wet the adjacent horse trail is,
some may wish to return by walking along sections of the slightly
longer horse trail where more river views may be found.
The
hike will be over at this point. However, I recommend people bring a
lunch and then enjoy 20 to 30 minutes visiting the hatchery and Visitor
Center. The king salmon should be at the height of the fall run.
Yard long salmon can be seen going up the fish ladder to the
hatchery. For those that have not seen this amazing scene, it is
amazing! BRING YOUR CAMERA.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: The drive is about 45 minutes and is around 20 miles. Suggested Donation to the driver is $6.
HIKE LEADER/SWEEP: Jim and Gail Cutler
SPECIAL NOTES: There are toilets at the fish hatchery at the start of the hike and at the turn around point.
