Shirland Canal Hike

Friday, June 3, 2022

DIFFICULTY:  Moderate, mostly level with a few small hills, out and back, not a loop

HIKE DISTANCE:  5 miles

GENERAL LOCATION:  Off Auburn-Folsom Rd. in Auburn

DESCRIPTION:  The hike begins at Railhead Park on Pacific Avenue.  From the park there is a short walk up the road to the trailhead.  The narrow trail follows the canal through a densely wooded area.    Along the way there are some great views of the American River.

We will stop for a snack break at the turnaround point.  For those who wish to bring a lunch to eat at the end of the hike, there are a few picnic tables at Railhead Park.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: Drive time to trailhead is about 30 minutes for a distance of approximately 15 miles.  Expected return time to SCLH is 1:00 p.m.

DONATION to Driver:  $4.

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP:   Cathy Hoyt/TBD

SPECIAL NOTES:  Rain the day before, or on the day of the hike will cancel the hike.  Also, excessive heat will cancel hike. Be sure to check the website to confirm the hike status the morning of the hike.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE:   Restrooms at the parking lot at Railhead Park

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:  Sturdy boots and trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Review the website guidelines for hikers.

Be sure to bring a change of shoes to wear after the hike to avoid getting your driver's car muddy.

RISKS:  The trail is narrow and rocky in places.  There are a few steep drop-offs beside the trail.  Access to the trailhead goes alongside a road for a short distance where there is no sidewalk.
