Showers Lake

Tuesday, August 6, 2019

DIFFICULTY:  Strenuous based on distance, altitude and accumulated elevation gain.

ELEVATION GAIN:  Showers Lake is at 8664' altitude - 94' higher than the trailhead; however the accumulated altitude gain out and back is 1400'.

HIKE DISTANCE:  10.2 miles

GENERAL LOCATION:  Carson Pass on Highway 88

DESCRIPTION:  This hike is part of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is a gorgeous hike.  We have views of Lake Tahoe in the distance.  We pass through the headwaters of the Upper Truckee River (a creek at this elevation) - through forest and expansive meadows.  The middle part of the hike, through Miess Meadows is quite flat.  If the timing is right, there are great spreads of wild flowers on this hike.  Showers Lake is a beautiful granite-rimmed alpine lake.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  2 ½ hours – 110 miles - an $18 contribution to driver

HIKE LEADER:  Jim Fisher-(916) 205-4849       SWEEP: Denny Fisher-(916) 505-4948

SPECIAL NOTES:

FACILITIES AVAILABLE:  Restrooms at trail head and nearby Carson Pass ranger station.

RISKS:  Altitude and distance are factors to consider.  If you have any problems with exertion at high altitude, avoid this hike.  Check the Carson Pass weather forecast before coming on hike.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE:

1.   Read the Hiking Guidelines on  our club’s website.

2.   If you have any health issues please consider your condition before hiking.  This is a long, high altitude, significant elevation gain hike.

3.   Bring a copy of your ID (drivers license), health card, and a name and phone number of an emergency contact person.

4.   Bring another pair of shoes with your hiking boots along with a bag to store your dirty gear.  Please be considerate of your driver’s car and wear clean shoes home.

5.   Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, sun screen, and hiking boots and Good & Plenty candy and a Payday candy bar for the hike leader and sweep so they can make the entire 10.2 miles.

6.   Hiking poles are always recommended.  There are several creek crossings.

7.   Bring money to buy dinner if we are late in turning.
