DIFFICULTY: Moderately Strenuous -
based on information from the Middle Mountain Foundation. This hike has not
been prehiked to ensure accuracy.
ELEVATION
GAIN:
Per the limited information available
from the folks that arrange charter docent-led hikes, we should expect about
1000 feet of gain over the course of the hike.
HIKE
DISTANCE:
Approximately 6 – 7 miles.
GENERAL
LOCATION:
The Sutter Buttes are located northwest
of Yuba City.
DESCRIPTION: This will be
a docent – led hike on the private property of Sutter Buttes. It will be
approximately 6 – 7 miles in length. The scenery and the views will be quite
unique. On a clear day you may see Mt Shasta on the north and Yosemite to the south. The docent will provide
commentary on the history of the Buttes.
It is important to note
that Sutter Buttes does not have maintained trails. Hikes are conducted
“cross-country” as led by the docent. Some challenges include the holes
created by various animals that roam the land.
Here is pertinent
information copied from the Middle Mountain Foundation website on what to
expect:
The
Middle
Mountain Foundation
Interpretive Program hikes provide access to the privately owned Sutter Buttes
hillsides and peaks. Guides share its unique origin and history and examine with
you a natural ecology that has become increasingly rare in our time. The
different hikes and diverse guides each offer a singular experience in the
Buttes.
A
typical day in the Buttes begins at 8:00 am and ends around 3:30 pm (LHH will be
a bit later as noted below). Trips are scheduled and will proceed in all but the
most severe weather conditions. Participants of all hikes should be prepared to
expect uneven footing, stepping over rocks and boulders, crossing streams, and
hill climbing. Spring hikers are likely to encounter wet, squishy, ankle-deep
grass, while fall trekkers will be contending with thistles and stickers.
Poison oak is abundant, but you will be warned of its proximity. Rattlesnakes,
though common in the warmer weather, are usually reclusive and inactive during
our hiking seasons. Hikes are limited to 20 unless otherwise
stated.
LUNCH:
Bring your lunch. The lunch break is
planned for mid hike.
TRAVEL
PLANS
/
DISTANCE:
The distance to the Sutter Buttes is
approximately 50 miles. We will rendezvous with our Docent Joe in Yuba City and he will
escort us to the so-called trail head. We have planned to meet Joe in
Yuba City at
8:15 AM.
We will meet at 7:00 AM
and plan to leave at 7:15 AM. Suggested
contribution for riders is $9. Detailed driving directions will be
handed out to all drivers. We do not know the rendezvous point as of this
writing.
DINNER
PLANS: We have no set dinner plans. We should
be back in Lincoln by 5:00 PM or earlier. We can also
plan an ad hoc dinner in Yuba
City based on when we complete our hike for those
interested. With a docent – lead tour, the hike time could well vary.
