ELLIS PEAK
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2015

DIFFICULTY:  Strenuous

ELEVATION:  Starting elevation — 7680 ft.   Highest elevation at Ellis Peak — 8740.   Elevation gain — 1465 ft.

HIKE DISTANCE:  7 miles.  An “in and out” hike, not a loop.

GENERAL LOCATION:  West side of Lake Tahoe area

DESCRIPTION:  As one hiking book states: “The splendor of the northern Sierra is powerfully vivid when viewed from a perch atop the rocky ridge crested by the Ellis Peak trail.”   After what is considered one of the shortest hikes to a landmark peak at Tahoe, you are rewarded with a 360 degree vista.  Everywhere you look you can take in miles of high Sierra grandeur.

Aside from the fact that it is only 3.5 miles to the peak, the trail is steep in some places, especially in the first mile where you climb 800 feet in one mile through the forest.  But then you are rewarded with some wonderful views and the trail becomes less steep.  (Note:  The remainder of the trail will be described later after a prehike!)

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:  TBD after a prehike.
