LITTON TRAIL TUESDAY, MARCH 11,
2014
IMPORTANT NOTE: This hike REQUIRES that you make an RSVP to
the hike leader, Sue Geisler, if you are planning on attending. This is due to
the limited parking area and to inform our guide at the North Star Mining Museum
of the number of people to expect on the tour. RSVP via email to Sue at
suehiker19@gmail.com by Wednesday, March 5th. Sue will acknowledge your email
with a confirmation email. Thank you!
DIFFICULTY: Easy
ELEVATION CHANGE: 131 feet. Elevation
start and finish --- 2500 feet
HIKE DISTANCE: 4 miles total --- in and
out, not a loop hike
GENERAL LOCATION: In the outskirts of Grass Valley.
DESCRIPTION: This is a trail created by the Bear Yuba Land Trust
(formerly called Nevada County Land Trust). The Land Trust, a prominent family
(the Littons), and private donations all combined to make this trail a reality.
It is located in an urban greenbelt in the vicinity the Sierra College campus
traversing a hillside with Ponderosa Pines, Madrone trees, Manzanita bushes, and
other shrubbery. Part of the trail is gravel, part pine needles-covered dirt,
and part pavement. After the hike, we will drive to the North Star Mining
Museum and have lunch in Glenn Jones Park which is adjacent to the museum.
Afterwards we will enjoy a very special tour of the museum by Rolf, one of the
outstanding volunteers, who has spent many, many hours restoring some of the old
machinery associated with gold mining. You will also see the world's largest
Pelton wheel!! The tour will last about an hour plus time to view the many
exhibits.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: 1 hour driving time and approximately
40 miles one way. Return time to Lincoln --- approximately 3:30 pm. A donation
of $6 is suggested for riders. There is no fee for the museum, but a small donation
is very much appreciated as this is a special tour just for our hiking group. Driving directions will be handed out the day of
the hike as the parking area may change depending on the number of hikers and
cars needed.
