DIFFICULTY: Moderate

ELEVATION/ELEVATION GAIN: Trailhead at 2,400 feet, highest point about 3,000 feet, with many ups and downs

HIKE DISTANCE: About 7 ˝ miles (out and back, not a loop)

GENERAL LOCATION: Trailhead at Rocky Rest Campground along North Yuba River, off Highway 49 about 30 miles north of Nevada City

DESCRIPTION: Hiking along the south side of the North Yuba River through old growth pines, firs, and oak woodlands offers great views up and down the river canyon. We may have some good fall color. We will hike upstream to St. Catherine’s Creek, a lovely turn-around point where we will enjoy lunch.

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: Travel time is 1 hour and 45 minutes, approximately 77 miles from SCLH. Expected return about 5:00 p.m. Suggested donation to drivers is $9.

HIKE LEADER/SWEEP: Gay Mackintosh/Barry Mackintosh

SPECIAL NOTES: Rain cancels hike

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: One non-flush toilet at trailhead. We may stop in Nevada City at the Burger King.

PREPARATION FOR HIKE: Bring hiking boots, lunch, water, layered clothing (trail has a lot of shade—so it could be cool). Trekking poles recommended.

RISKS: Trail is single file and narrow in places, with some steep drop-offs. Some poison oak, but it can be avoided. Some black flies if the weather is warm. Trail has a lot of leaf and needle covering in sections that can be slippery if wet—also some muddy places.
