DIFFICULTY: Easy. The trail is all asphalt, paved, roadway, or
wooden boardwalk.
HIKE DISTANCE: Approximately
3 Miles—in and out, not a loop. Add to that the tour and enjoying Old Town.
GENERAL LOCATION: Old Town Sacramento and along the west side of the Sacramento River
DESCRIPTION: This hike has 2 distinct components. The first one is a walk south the length of Old Town Sacramento. We will cross
from Old Town
near the Tower Bridge onto the “Riverfront
Promenade”. This walkway has information
boards about Sacramento
and vistas of the River. We continue
along the river on a bike trail to its end. Here we have a to walk a short
distance on low volume roads into the Sacramento River Marina.
In the marina we will follow a paved walkway to a picnic area where we
can have a snack. We return the same way. The only difference is along the
promenade where we will go down a ramp to a walkway that walks over the river
and through the tourists boats in the area to the Delta King paddle boat and
back through Old Town (about 30 stairs steps up and down)
The second component is a
docent led tour of the Old Sacramento
Underground. This tour lasts an hour and tickets MUST BE ACQUIRED in
ADVANCE. There are low overhangs and
uneven surfaces on the tour.
TRAVEL DISTANCE: 35-minute
drive time to Old
Town. A donation of $6 is
suggested. Parking costs should be split
among those in each car (The lot costs $1.25 for the 1st half-hour
and a dollar for each additional half-hour).
UNDERGROUND TOUR TICKETS: The tours are limited to 20 people per
tour. Call the ticket office and book
your reservation on the 11:30 am tour.
If filled, request the noon tour.
Cost is $15.00. THESE TOURS GO
RAIN OR SHINE AND TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.
If inclement weather is forecast, we may limit our hike to the underground
tour only.
LUNCH: There are many dining
possibilities. I will take the group to
a cluster of 4 modest priced eateries that have shared outside tables to sit
at. They are a hot dog place, fish and chips, Indonesian food, or burgers, etc.
However, you can select from many other establishments in the immediate
area. After the underground tour is
over, each carpool can decide on lunch options or other activities to pursue.
