DIFFICULTY:
Easy, Starting Elevation is at 6200 feet
ELEVATION GAIN:
Total gain, with all ups and downs less than 400 feet
HIKE DISTANCE:
5 miles in and out.
GENERAL LOCATION:
6 miles north of highway 80 on Highway 89, north of Truckee.
DESCRIPTION:
The trail is generally flat, hard pack and some dust this time of year. Trail follows the Sagehen Creek thru dense
forest of aspen, willows, pines and furs, some open areas with pond created by
Beavers, and open meadow upon reaching Stampede Reservoir. The water level will be down, and at Stampede
Reservoir we will do some exploring of the meadow before returning by the same
trail. Time for the hike will be about 3 hours. BBQ following at our Truckee cabin, no
donation this year. Hosted by club.
TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE:
One Hour 40 minutes each way. One way distance is about 90 miles. This is a $12
driver donation. Detailed driving directions will be handed out to all
drivers. After the hike everyone is invited to stop at our cabin in
Truckee for a hamburger BBQ and relaxation after the hike. For planning purposes,
please RSVP for the BBQ, with your choice of hamburger, turkey or veggie
burger. If you don’t plan on stopping at
the cabin, make sure you ride with a driver that is coming straight back to
Lincoln.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE:
No restrooms available. We will stop at the Boreal Ridge Caltrans rest stop at
Donner Summit before reaching the trailhead. Restrooms are available at the
cabin after the hike.
PREPARATIONS FOR HIKE:
- Bring
a copy of your ID (driver's license), Health Card, and an emergency
contact name and phone number with you when you hike.
- If
you have any health issues, please consider your condition before hiking.
- Always
bring 2 pairs of shoes, along with a plastic bag to store your muddy/dusty
hiking boots after the hike. DO NOT get your driver's car dirty by
wearing your dirty boots on the drive home.
- Bring
hiking boots, sunscreen, insect repellant, water, snack or lunch.
RISKS: Some of the
walking is on loose rocks. The trail is mostly shaded with open area in
the meadow.
WEATHER:
Summer in the area should be in the 70’s to mid-80’s during the hike.
RETURN
TIME:
If joining the BBQ in Truckee, approximately 4:30 pm at OC Lodge.
