Velma Lakes at Desolation Valley

DIFFICULTY: Strenuous

 

ELEVATION GAIN: 1600 ft. total climb. Elevation at top is about 8400 ft.

 

HIKE DISTANCE: 10 miles

 

GENERAL LOCATION: Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

 

DESCRIPTION: Emerald Bay to Eagle Lake and then upwards into Desolation Valley and down to Velma Lakes for lunch. Much of the trail is rocky, exposed, and open, making for wide-open views and plenty of granite drama. The views are great!

 

TRAVEL TIME/DISTANCE: Two and one half hours each way. One way distance is about 115 miles. This is a $15 driver donation. Detailed driving directions will be handed out to all drivers.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Rest room at trail head.

PREPARATIONS FOR HIKE: Refer to #8 and #9 in the “Hike information and Guidelines” on our web site. Bring lunch, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Also bring money; we plan to stop for dinner in Tahoe City on the way home.
