Winnemucca Lake
Thursday, Jul 15, 2021
DIFFICULTY: Moderate - because of altitude - otherwise pretty easy in terms of length and climb
ELEVATION GAIN: The trailhead is at 8600' altitude - the lake is less than 500' higher.
HIKE DISTANCE: 4.5 miles
GENERAL LOCATION:
Carson Pass on Highway 88
DESCRIPTION:
This hike is part of the Pacific Crest Trail. At this time of year, it should be a gorgeous hike. We
start from the Carson Pass ranger station, and pass by Frog Lake.
From Frog Lake, there is a great vista overlooking Red Lake and
Hope Valley. With any luck, we will hit the wildflowers near their peak.. The meadow leading up to
Winnemucca should be
abundant with wildflowers. The trail has two 300' assents to
Winnemucca - there are no major ups and downs. Be aware this is a
long drive for a short hike - but the wildflower rewards should be
worth it. The pace of the hike will allow time for viewing and photographing the scenery. We plan to stop for dinner on the way home at a restaurant to be determined.
